- (Try as alternative: by the way*, using * to truncate and leave out the last portion of the full authorized field entry: " [sound recording]".)
- clancy, tom 1947- - by Author
- (Or try clancy, tom * to leave out the last portion of the full authorized field entry: " 1947 - ". )
- Star wars, Bobba Fett, bk.004 - by Series
- (or use the * to truncate the authorized entry.)
- Encyclopedia of American silver manufacturers - by Title

An Authority search looks for exact full-field matches to your word or words in the same order you typed them.
Tip: Phrase searching is a similar method that might be easier to use for most common searches, as truncation is not required.
A successful Authority (aka "Exact") match must take into consideration the full field entry, either by matching the full field exactly (including any librarian catalog notations that might be included), or by utilizing the truncation character "*" to direct system to ignore any extra characters that may be in the field. It is suggested that the truncation character be used in most Authority searches.
A "*" character can preceed or follow the search query, or you can use it both at front and end of your query string.
Even the common small words (e.g. 'stop words') are actively used in the matching process in the Authority/Exact mode, so this search can be very helpful for titles that contain a large percentage of these type of common words.
Tip: Phrase searching is a similar method that might be easier to use for most searches, as truncation is not required.

types, or other options. Click Open Search Options.
